Abstract
Objectives: Osteoporosis and atherosclerosis are mostly prevalent disease in ageing population and the recent studies suggest the possible pathogenic linkage between the two diseases. Hyperlipidemia, which is one of the strongest risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, is known to affect bone metabolism, although the precise correlation is not clarified yet. We investigated the relationship between cholesterol and bone metabolism in apparently healthy Korean males.

Methods: In 85 male adults(mean age 46 yrs), anthropometric measurements were done. Fasting blood glucose and lipid profiles were measured and an atherogenic index was calculated with serum total cholesterol level divided by high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) level. Lumbar spine bone mineral density(BMD) was measured with dual X-ray absorptiometry.

Results: In bivariate analyses, serum HDL-C level showed tendencies for positive correlation with lumbar spine BMD T-score(r=0.198, P=0.069) and atherogenic index for negative correlation(r=-0.183, P=0.093). In partial correlation with adjustment for age and body mass index, HDL-C showed a significant positive correlation with lumbar spine T-score(r=0.217, P=0.048), and atherogenic index showed a consistent tendency. Other variables didn¡¯t show any correlation with lumbar spine BMD.

Conclusion: Lumbar spine BMD was in positive correlation with serum HDL-C and in negative correlation with atherogenic index. These results show the possible protective role of HDL-C in bone loss.
